Recreational therapy, sometimes referred to as therapeutic recreation, is a methodical process that addresses the assessed needs of people with illnesses and/or disabling conditions through the use of recreation and other activity-based interventions. The ultimate goal of this process is to promote the physical and mental well-being of these individuals.To enable full involvement in life, the RT process aims to preserve or enhance physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual functioning.
A "Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist" (CTRS) either directly supervises or delivers the services.Recreational therapy encompasses a range of approaches, such as arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, music, and community outings, to offer individuals therapeutic and recreational activities.
